  • Buying a car 2022 edition

Hey guys wondering what suggestions you guys have.

Typically I never buy new cars. My rule was always buy used with minimal mileage (under 20k) and 2 years old. Ideally a car that has records proving it was serviced regularly for that time period. Also always pay cash no financing.

I typically look through half a dozen dealerships/used car lots as I don't know enough to properly buy from a private owner and don't want to get stuck with a lemon. Well all decent used cars above are now selling for 20k plus. I spoke to dealer and they basically said there is a 1-1.5 year wait on getting a new car (especially hybrids). They won't even take the time to try and convince me to buy anything.

I still plan to buy with cash but...

Is there any point getting these two year old used cars with prices in current market? Is it better to just buy new and deal with waiting one year to get it? Should I be waiting longer for market to swing back and if so how long?

Curious what others are doing right now.

following because holy shit is this ever a huge blind spot for me.

i actually need a new car soon and was just going to pick up a reasonably recent sports suv deal for 25-30k and finance it / pay off aggressively.

fwiw when i looked at prices, it didnt seem to me like that batshit +150% covid markup nonsense was in effect but again, none of this is my bag.

So caved and bought a new 2023 Kia forte ex today. Quite the experience.

Second hand market on cars is still ridiculously priced in Canada. Getting a new car can literally take years depending on what you want. My dealership has like no cars and the owner admitted he literally has staff park out front to make it look like they have more inventory!

I came in this morning and a salesperson showed me a "demo car" that was driven by the owners daughter (about 3k miles on it). Already had scratched bumper... Quoted price was 2000$ more than if we bought the car brand new!!!! That's right used scratched up cars selling higher price than new because there are no new cars on the lot (only sold ones).

The salesperson explained that basically he is given like 6 new cars a month and if he sells them all Kia will them send him 7 cars next month. But if he doesn't sell them all he only gets 5 the next month. On top of it once we agreed to buy the car model they immediately start calling around to see if they can find one and have to trade one of their new cars for the one we want from another dealership. This can result in several months wait worst case scenario. Luckily they were visibly excited to immediately get a hit in Quebec. We should be getting our new car in 2-3 weeks at worst as a result.

We didn't finance so can't comment on that.
