...based on the Clavell book. Fairly sure the 80s miniseries was decent. I can only remember Toshiro Mifune, Richard Chamberlain and John Rhys-Davies from it. I think I've read most of Clavell's books. With scripts he is likely best known for being involved in The Great Escape.

tyde and i talked a bit about this. the series looks like a winner and im in. the book hasnt aged very well but it appears they have cherry picked the best aspects of it and left a lot of the dated exoticism behind. the more i see of the trailers the more excited i get, it looks gorgeous.

Started watching curb your enthusiasm again for the final season, again. Can't help but feel it's gotten old and lost its charm. With shows out there like Always Sunny who just do it so much better in tackling controversial issues. I like Larry David but it's painful to see him continue after all this time.

It's not bad, but it certainly is nothing like it once was.

im watching masters of the sky on apple tv and its doing this thing where one minute its lots of corny awful dialog and stupid weirdly wrong hair cuts and the next its absolutely abjectly terrifying claustrophobic nightmare fuel thousands of feet above the earth. 2 eps in and im giving it an earnest thumbs up overall.

On 21st and I think they're releasing all 6 episodes.

From other stuff there's more 1923 and Reacher. TV has been weak enough that I'm kinda looking forward to those.

It might have been BCB that recommended that or someone else. I only watched a few episodes and whatever streaming service it was on I dropped.

On other stuff 1923 is offensively bad and I never finished Reacher.

I don't know what happened with 1923 for them to release it at its current levels of retardation. I'm guessing no one researched anything, someone thought they could play both sides of US political field and on top of that the writers are just plain awful. Acting is decent for what they're working with. but the show comes off as a scuffed remake of Yellowstone that's less subtle (already a low bar) and all they did was rewind the bitch for a century. Fairly sure most things aren't better with extra rape and misery.

this is literally all sheridan does. he did it with landsman too. the networks dont care because he brings the hits i guess.

god speaking of sheridan... just rewatched sicario. 100% forgot he wrote it and was just so completely overwhelmed by how much fucking movie it is, so glad i wasnt thinking about his involvement during it.

it makes absolutely no fucking sense to me how he wrote sicario and then air balled literally every single project hes touched since.

Mayor of Kingstown was also ok. I'm guessing Hugh Dillon did most of the heavy lifting on that one and Sheridan is mostly as a name/investor in that project.

Dillon is from Kingston, Ontario. It's a small town with 9 prisons and it used to be called King's Town. In the show it's just transplanted to Michigan and the local gangs are more familiar to American viewers. At a quick glance it looks like few years ago they only had local bikers that had set up permanent shop and the rest was just out of town gang members visiting for a few days, in relation to trafficking (drugs, people, guns).

Looking into this more apparently Mayor of Kingstown was the first show/script Sheridan wrote. So i'm guessing around 2020ish he started believing his own cowboy mythos, hit his head too many times and/or drugs, because after that there has been steep decline in quality.
