i mean, one of the great failings of modern reporting/media is their willingness to cherry pick the most unstable and statistically insignificant voices and elevate them to some sort of credible datapoint.

and im not discounting the real threat here btw. but there are whole ass teams of people in countries we consider ourselves informally at war with who do nothing but post comments like 'time to start capping leftys' under articles. and part of it is to normalize and promote extremism but the real magic bullet is when someone amplifies that comment and it ends up as a datapoint in some thought piece about hOw CraZY thInGS ArE GetTinG.

I am a 65 year old engineer, and I honestly said 20 years ago that "mankind is not smart enough to survive the internet". As a younger man, one persons ability to spread erroneous information was very limited, today any retard can go at it all day long, and factually there is a large percentage of people that will take the most ridiculous meme as pure fact. The concept of conformational bias has been around for centuries, but we have entered the era of "needy conformational bias" where people have an emotional need to have their bias fed.

In my own family, I have a 68 year old retired Army doctor who is a bible thumper and progressive, and a 67 year old retired Air Force pilot who went full Qanon and is currently preparing for the civil war.
The one thing that we share is that we are all on the spectrum, ( I describe myself as having a heavy sprinkling of aspergers).
