  • quick reminder; we havent had anything close to a worst case scenario EV fire. you know, yet.

    https://www.axios.com/2024/08/08/ev-fires

so there was a fire the other day in an underground garage in south korea; a mercedes EV that wasnt even charging just burst into flames and incinerated dozens of cars and torched hundreds of others, knocking out power to the building etc etc.

now imagine that happening in a garage _filled_ with EVs.

under an apartment building, for example.

    at night.

sooner or later the lucks going to run out and its going to be a mass casualty event.

thank god the world isnt getting hotter or we could expect a predictable rise in frequency and damage.

you know, there used to be a car with an engine crankcase made of magnesium alloy. as we all learned in 10th grade, magnesium is extraordinarily flammable, and it seems like it would be a terrible material to make car parts from. it turns out that the car was extraordinarily flammable, in that it didn't necessarily catch on fire more often than any other car, but if the engine did catch fire it was pretty much impossible to put it out and the car and anything around it would burn to the ground. that car was the volkswagen beetle, they made a fucking billion of them, some of them burned up for no good reason, and it wasn't really a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
