            Zalgo my first thought was 'this must have been worth 6 figs easy to uncle' and probably a similar sized pot of gold on darkweb ... honestly i wonder what stopped them from going that route.

              also it appears we have our answer; both researchers used the changelog (and ostensibly bindiff) to find the patched code and craft an exploit. so technically neither were 0days and any state sponsored security program would have likely beaten them to the punch.
