WHITE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI)—Owner of Indiana Carvings Chaz Chiafos is known for turning 1,000+ pound trees and tree stumps into beautiful carvings. But a couple weeks ago Chaz suffered an injury that could have been pretty threatening to his business.
"I have an angle grinder," said Chaz. "I've been using a cut saw disk for almost a year now, it got a little gunked up so I bought a new one that was way too aggressive, it caught, went flying back and just jabbed right into my hand."
Splitting it right open, Chaz went to the hospital and he's now left with more than 13 stitches and a hand he can barely move properly.
"I was supposed to have my cast in for a month total and then take it off and start physical therapy," said Chaz.
Chaz said it hasn't drastically changed his work habits however it was hard for him to properly grip the chain saw to create his art.
"I can't take a month off," said Chaz. "I have a wife and four kids that depend on me, my wife is a stay at home mom with four kids raising our babies so I had to think of ways to keep going."
-and so he did. "I started thinking of this design that would attach onto the saw where I can keep my hand flat still," said Chaz.
He drew a sketch of what he needed and 18 year-old Garret Owens with Owens Machine & Welding made it happen.
"At first it looked a little difficult but then once we started actually putting things together and getting ideas it was pretty simple," said Garret.
Garret had the bracelet made within four hours.
"It felt pretty good knowing that he could get back to work," said Garret. "It pretty much saved him."
Chaz said he's working with his hand daily and hopes to be back at full speed with it soon.
Chaz is joined by others who are also artists for Indiana Carvings. For information on Indiana Carvings click here.
