apparently between 50-100 people are under that rubble. they got about 50 people out of the units left standing.

so this just gets worse and worse... officially, 159 people 'missing'.
friend who lives down there says this is an incredibly high-volume area for people coming in to vacation. a lot of those apartments were taken by AirBNB renters, often by whole families. and of course everyone was asleep.
which also kind of lends itself to what the fuck happened.. eg we have this massive influx of bodies showing up all at once, hence the whole thing giving out and pancaking, instead of some sort of thing where it starts to lean, people have time to amscray, etc.
like honestly the more you look at the moment to moment reality of this collapse the more dramatic and insane and nightmarish it gets.

Normally buildings dont just collapse there are always signs everywhere like widening cracks, bulging ceilings, noises like grumbling and creaking, big swats of plaster falling from walls
maybe it was build on a small sinkhole which pulled some part of the concrete pilings down, will be a interesting investigation, coincidently some months ago i was watching a docu on YT about a building which was build new and then had to be demolished because cracks where showing in the foundation.

“Though some of this damage is minor, most of the concrete deterioration needs to be repaired in a timely fashion,” the consultant, Frank Morabito, wrote about damage near the base of the structure as part of his October 2018 report on the 40-year-old building in Surfside, Fla. He gave no indication that the structure was at risk of collapse, though he noted that the needed repairs would be aimed at “maintaining the structural integrity” of the building and its 136 units.

going to be jail time and lawsuits galore here.
the entire report basically said “this building is Fuct” and “whoever did the last round of repairs did a extra shitty job”.

Not following the story especially closely but I will surely look at ocean front condos differently forever after
I also wonder about the condo owners’ continued exposure to expenses related to demolition and cleanup, etc not to mention lawsuits.
sure you lost the entire value of your unit but it prolly doesn’t end there. in that context, perhaps death wasn’t the worst financial outcome for the condo owners and their families
would be interested in what other buildings were done by that particular general contractor and architect/engineer. No way this was a unique design. There are few original thoughts in any walk of life.
what a shitshow.
