    Euphoria s2

    The Righteous Gemstones s2

    Peacemaker s1

    Ozark s4

    Snowpiercer s3

...and 5-10 random shows starting that can be whatever.

The Righteous Gemstones was ok with 2 episode start.

Euphoria's first new episode was great.

Peacemaker has John Cena in it and the characters 1st (maybe) movie wasn't awful. One of the suicide squad thingies. Likely one of the best DC's comic book hero movies in the last 10 years. You may or may not count Joker in that list.

Ozark is fairly boring, but still better than 9/10 shows. The new season might not suck.

Snowpiercer has been decent for 2 seasons.

Euphoria kinda faded the odds in it's own sub category. Gambling on a random teen drama to be entertaining doesn't seem like a good idea.

I think the best description i could give about it, is that it's only about teens. Not really for teens. It's real/realistic, but it isn't shot or told that way. It's emotional realism or fantasy.

You might have to watch 2ish episodes to find things you like enough to watch the rest of the show. It does about 100 things well. The pilot is likely the weakest episode though.

It's mostly shot on soundstage. It was known for it's visual look in season 1. So they did something that isn't being done anymore and chose another look for season 2.

my take from a distance is that euphoria is a modern redux of Kids and i do think thats a valid goal if true.

Yea something like that. I think Korine/Clark might have lucked out with Kids more than anything. They can obv spot talent, read the room and they made one good bet. There was a mention somewhere that euphoria is kids x trainspotting x something. That said i only like 3 movies from Danny Boyle and not a big Irvine Welsh fan. Excluding the subject matter i think Trainspotting is more similar in what makes the show good.

1st episode of Peacemaker was awful. 2nd less awful and 3rd tolerable. It might top out at mediocre at some point.

The first episode brings everyone up to speed by spoiling the related movie. They literally show the relevant parts and the ending by using footage from the movie. Whoever made the pilot apparently couldn't come up with anything better. For the most part the movie and the show are barely related. The changed everything that made the movie good and decided to waste everyone's time instead.

Something like 1/10 minutes serves a purpose in the pilot.

also to be clear calling the movie good is some complicated, challenging math right there.

yea obv just in comparison to several bad movies, on it's own it would be a bottom tier action movie on any given year in the 80's

Station Eleven was decent. Small quirky story. 10 episodes that started rolling in December and finished a day ago or so. I was bored last night and watched the thing in few hours. The first episode is likely needed for the rest of the show, but on it's own it's really tedious. I don't think premise gives the show justice. I initially skipped it because i just assumed it was going to be random pandemic porn.

"Twenty years after a flu pandemic resulted in the collapse of civilization, a group of survivors who make their living as traveling performers encounter a violent cult led by a man whose past is unknowingly linked to a member of the troupe"

Apparently it's based on a book from 2014 and was greenlit in 2019ish.

just finished station eleven. mixed feelings. some good acting, im a huge mackenzie davis shill so its great to see her get work. but man i did a _lot_ of fast forwarding after a while and i dont think i missed anything interesting/important once. also i sat back and mapped out the actual plot relating to tyler and its a fuckin mess. he claims a 11 year old girl set up the suicide attack which is almost certainly bullshit and even if its not, he 100% set up the 2nd wave of suicide attacks against the museum, and everyone seems super comfortable with just letting all that shit slide and moving on as pallies. because... [ checks notes ]... he made up with his mom.

ok i just read the wikipedia plot summary of the book and yeah, wow... not a lot of common ground there. also, jesus christ..

Oh and random bit about Peacemaker. The Comedian from The Watchmen is a very loose adaptation of the IP. In the 80s DC bought rights to a bunch of characters from another publishing company that went under. Moore that wrote The Watchmen initially used those characters in the story. DC figured they might use them in the future and decided that maybe giving them to Moore wouldn't be a good idea.

I didn't expect anything close to The Comedian from the Peacemaker show. I would have been content with Retarded Captain America, just as he was depicted in the movie.

Halfway through a Korean sci fi drama called The Silent Sea on Netflix. Pretty generic sci fi drama. Definitely doesn’t break any new ground. But definitely watchable.

that feels very korean; glossy and well executed but not straying too far from the pack. ill fuck with it tonight.

I dislike Peacemaker less. The last 3ish episodes have been a lot better. Like mediocre plus. Eagly is my favorite. The first 2-3 episodes were just really unnecessary. I guess i could give extra points for shoving every minority in one character and the assumed "audience" rep in one. Both are completely worthless still, but at least they're condensed.

The 5th episode of S2 of Euphoria was the fiend special. I think it was needed tbh. It was a Euphoria like combination of funny, horrible and a bit too real. S1 was at times pretty draining to watch and to a degree S2 had been a breeze compared to that. 5th episode reeled it back a notch. Likeable character doing basic fiend stuff tends to have a more significant impact compered to less "important" characters doing more shady stuff.

I might watch Ozark one day.

Righteous Gemstones is still ok. In some random article (Vanity Fair maybe?) about LotR series due September there was a 20 min video embedded about the career of John Goodman and i had forgotten how many things he did with Coen brothers. And those were all good Coen brothers movies. I don't mind that he has a bigger role in S2.

Doubt we need a new thread for LotR series. So might as well add here that nothing about it sounds good. Some dumbass burned around half billion plus on the first season with maybe a third of it stretching to future seasons.

250m for just rights to the few hundred pages of "appendixes" and IP related to that in other Tolkien works (mostly Silmarillion). Maybe 400ish million on shooting the 1st season with 150m back in tax credits. All of it given to 2 writers that have never ran a show or led a writes room. I hope someone's dick got sucked, because otherwise none of it makes any sense.

The source material is loose enough that you can with good conscience stretch a few seasons out of it. It's not as bad as trying to turn a 100 odd page children's story to 6-9h of cinema, but it does take a lot of work none the less.

There's all sorts of flawed takes floating around. Mostly at the GoT lite and the Wokeness axis. I don't really understand where the GoT lite angle/worries come from. From some perspective Tolkiens book world always was GoT lite. It's littered with morally ambiguous characters, Machiavellian themes and everything related to that. You obviously don't get random GRRM kinks, but that's about it. Doubt there's a huge segment of people that thought LotR would have been better with more sadism and incest.

i literally tabbed over to mention that Euphoria is better by a factor of 10 than anything ive ever seen before, and i just wrapped season 1.

ill have more to say shortly.

                  oh fucking yes i will.

ok euphoria has me fucked up.

like its official. its valid from head to toe. its not like, guilty of anything, its not flawed. but im just fucking overwhelmed by the grief and pain on the books and perhaps even more by the grief and pain that hasnt even arrived yet.

like honestly this shit with fez / ash / mouse... fuck. there are only 2 more eps for the season and i dont honestly know what shoes are going to drop that arent going to fucking haunt the shit out of me. its got this 'no one here gets out alive' vibe thats just constantly looking for raw exposed nerves to harass.

ive never seen anything like it honestly, its like... if gaspar noe was actually brilliant, he would have done something like this.

                    anyway.

                    lotr.

                    just watched the trailer.

this show is going to flop so fucking hard.. please i beg you remind me on september 1 to buy some amzn puts.

it looks absolutely awful. like the cgi actually looks bad and dated. it looks like a youtube cartoon series for kids, basically.

and the show runners are going to be like 'see that waterfall? yeah cost us 20m. see how the spittle on that goblins jar catches the candle light? yeah we had to rent google cloud gpus to render that, another 30m USD right there' and then act shocked when the world tears them to fucking shreds.

jesus christ what a terrible use of money and its me saying this.
