Likely my favorite episode so far. I think it was closest to the original with tone and didn't mind it "proving" my point that the show doesn't need a whole lot more than a loose connection to Dream/Endless to enrich the world/characters. I'll wait for a while to speculate on anything that could be too spoilery.

Regarding the original comic I think I did mention that it hasn't really held too well as a whole. Especially the earliest parts that were used as the source for the show. You kinda need to mentally erase most DC related characters, update the visuals and pick the story from that. I just looked it as a first draft of the story board for a show. Disparity of that and the end product was my biggest gripe.

In isolation the show is in many ways better than the earliest comics. 30+ years and a thousand fold budget tends to do that. There was enough shiny things in the first 6 episodes to distract from inconsistencies. I have no idea what happened to the last 4 episodes regarding script decisions. The feminist writer bit in the latest episode did provide some reason to believe that Gaiman might not have had the amount of creative control audience was led to believe.

Oh also the comic wasn't just Gaiman's vision. With any bigger project there's always the writer, editor and artists that all function as separate editing layers. Depending on the project the "editor's" role differs a lot. It can be anything from a traditional book editor's role to a tv producer's role. The artists are split to pencil, ink and color. That block resembles film editors the most. I think in the late 80s in this project the pencil and ink were still done by the same person. Anyways that part is always more time consuming and that leads to more artists than colorists working on the same project.

Anyways that conveyor belt system functions in bringing fresh eyes and it's very important because in isolation almost everyone becomes blind to their own work.

thats one of the things that really jumped out at me when i was reading the history of the series, how a lot of really intense, really expressive artistic visions were allowed to paint in bold strokes.

also the more i think about the series, and how they are basically trying to create something like 'the witcher' for goths, the more concerned i get that this thing is going to disintegrate in front of our eyes a la american gods. but perhaps im being unfair because the showrunner for AG basically walked over getting fucked over on budget....?

but yeah, whatever, it'll be a fun mess while it lasts.

also as an aside, its fucking weird now that better call saul is done and if IF we get any more westworld it will likely be in early 2024.

like we lost some real bangers, westworld was honestly putting in some work this season too.

Writer of the Calliope episode. The feminist writer line was in the original, but everything that came after that was hers. I still liked the tone as a compromise, but it was darker in the original.

absolutely loved Calliope and its budget was probably 1/50th of the average for the rest of the series.

                      House of Dragons....

                      SPOILER

                      such fucking terrible wigs.

also the dragons cgi is.. really bad somehow.

not a fan. ill watch it but this isnt making any effort to be artful or intriguing. i feel like i just got hit over the head with all the tits and blood and pain from the original with absolutely no effort spent to present any of it in any clever or constructive context.

also matt smith's face is disgusting and his particularly awful wig isnt helping.

It was ok. I suspect the same will happen with the LOTR show on Amazon.

i expect HoD will be less atrocious than LOTR simply because the latter is 1000% absolutely not made for adults.
