They usually give you a heads up beforehand for bigger drops, though they can randomly drop without much notice. When they drop you click "get in queue" and then your order in the queue gets randomized. So from there it's just luck if you got a low enough queue #. Because your place in the queue is randomized, you don't have to be lightning quick, you just have to get lucky. There really hasn't been a drop lately, outside of a small stress test.
