  • Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly rejected a note from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeking peace in the more than a month-long conflict. When the note was hand-delivered to him by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, Putin reportedly replied instead: "Tell him I will thrash them."

    • read a good take today; putin doesnt give a shit about 'winning the war', he just wants to apply enough pressure to annex a bunch of energy resource wealthy neighborhoods then bail.

also apparently this is all _exactly_ what he did in syria; roll in with troops, get absolutely manhandled, then just shell and bomb and generally terrorize until he got what he wanted.

          • its tempting to look for a silver lining here like 'oh the hostilities will end soon' but its probably best to think in terms of longer range ambitions. the notion that russia wont manufacture the requisite justifications to chip away at nato territories here is childishly naive.

short of putin literally dying, nothings going to stop russia from doing these relentless pulsing raids into sovereign european territories.

            • a lot of people are tearing this data up in the comments, its like a feeding frenzy, and i get that dismissing it based on MoD sources being included is logical at face value, but when that many people think a war is going swimmingly, i get Fucking Nervous.

They don't really match with too many sources and the first thing that pops up is that they didn't even bother to have matching categories in the same order. Or be able to "highlight" more than 2/3 categories. I don't even care how useful these broad categories are or how much new hardware both sides have gotten since "pre-invasion". I just can't trust those numbers when the presentation is indicative of incompetence and/or intentionally misleading.

gimmick i have absolutely no rebuttal for any of that, honestly. but we saw russia have the same 'problems' with syria before bombing them into subservient dust and i think that even if russia pulls back now, it will simply be to pour resources into updating its military capabilities before manufacturing a new reason to invade again next year.

                • Which speaks to a cornerstone of my forecast that absent any interest in diplomacy (the ship has officially sailed) this mess will continue for years and likely morph in unexpected fashion as is always the way of things
