    the incredible thing about all this is waxing poetic about how putin is moving towards a nuclear first strike on ukraine at 8am and by 8pm he's shelling a nuclear power plant upwind of russia and flooding sosh with videos accusing the fucking ukrainian mayor of doing it.

    theres also the curious endgame where russia launches a nuclear first strike and china immediately steps in and nukes russia in response.

    china's exposure to the american economy cant be overstated. if russia thinks china will sit back and let russia basically run a decapitation strike on us with impunity, china might see the need to protect its investment. beyond which, while russia might find its lot improved considerably by total global anarchy, china most assuredly would not.

    some random thoughts in no particular order;

    - we chose to pursue hypersonic weapons with conventional payloads. russia and china mount their hypersonics with nuclear payloads. i think russia realized that for a very brief window, this presented an exploitable opportunity; they can threaten us with hypersonic nuclear strikes and we really cant do shit about it. striking back with conventionals is ineffective and will likely simply result in either further hypersonic nuclear strikes or the need to respond in standard nuclear missiles, resulting in a full blown exchange, with the second order effects basically obliterating life on earth.

    - ukraine is actually a really big country. like i was just looking at a map and its huge, its bigger than poland. to stop with just ukraine or even ukraine + moldava seems strangely arbitrary. per fiona hill the obvious goal here would be to just keep on rolling through every fucking nation until their only neighbor is china.

    - the russian army is not prepared for conventional warfare with NATO. again the implication here is that russia has decided to pursue its goals through use of nuclear weapons, or the threat of them, or some hybrid where they point at the radioactive slag where poland or ukraine was and say 'this could be you if you refuse putins ambition for a christian empire'.

    - the root of this is clearly a biased and insane inner circle advising putin that the extinction of russia is an existential threat so they must expand to survive. its unclear if this is a solvable problem. it might be. but it would have to be solved primarily by russians and its unclear if that can happen quickly enough to defuse this.

    - we could see russia demonstrate its willingness to use nuclear weapons to obtain its objectives and simply refuse to fire back, opting to play the long game. to be honest this is the only post-russian-nuclear-aggression scenario the world can survive.

    - fucking russia man jesus christ.
